What does a plumber cost? How the price is determined
What does a plumber cost? The honest answer: it depends on the job, the timing and what turns out to be needed along the way. However, you can get a good idea in advance of what the price consists of and which questions to ask to avoid surprises. You can read that here.

What does a plumber's price consist of?
Call-out
Many plumbers charge a call-out fee: a fixed amount for coming out, or an amount that depends on the distance. Sometimes the first part of the working time is included. Always ask whether the call-out is charged separately.
Labour time: the hourly rate
If work is charged by the hour, you pay for the time the technician is working. Check whether billing is per full hour, per half hour or per quarter hour. For a small job, that makes a big difference.
Material
Parts such as a fill valve, a tap, couplings or a piece of pipe come on top of the labour. The price depends on what's needed and the quality.
Emergency, evening and weekend
Outside office hours, at night or at weekends, many plumbers charge a different rate. For a real emergency, such as water that keeps flowing, that's worth it. If it can wait until the next working day, planning ahead is often cheaper. Read when to call an emergency plumber immediately.
Equipment and specialist work
Some jobs require special equipment, such as a drain unblocking machine, a camera or measuring equipment for leak detection. That affects the price. More on this in what does drain unblocking cost and leak detection costs.
What else does the total price depend on?
- Accessibility. A pipe behind a cupboard is repaired more quickly than a pipe in a floor or behind tiles.
- What becomes clear on site. Sometimes the technician only sees on arrival that a part is worn or corroded.
- Condition of the installation. Old pipes or seized taps take more time.
- Consequential damage. Repairing tiles, plastering or a ceiling after a leak is usually a separate job.
Hourly rate or fixed price?
With an hourly rate, you don't know in advance exactly what you'll pay. If the job takes longer, the bill grows with it. With a fixed price, you agree an amount upfront for the work described. That gives you certainty.
At PandFix you'll hear upfront what the work will cost: we agree a fixed price before we start. If something different or extra turns out to be needed during the work, we'll discuss it with you first and only continue after your approval.
Which questions should you ask beforehand?
- Do you charge a call-out fee, and does that include working time?
- Is it a fixed price or an hourly rate? Which unit do you charge by?
- Is the material included, or does that come on top?
- Is there a different rate in the evenings or at weekends?
- What happens if there turns out to be more on site?
- Will I receive an invoice with a specification of work and materials?
How to keep costs down
- Limit the damage. Know where the stopcock is and turn it off in case of a leak. Read what to do in case of a leak.
- Give a good description. Explain what's wrong, since when, and send photos if possible. Then the technician comes with the right parts and doesn't have to visit twice.
- Combine jobs. If you have several small jobs, have them done in one visit.
- Clear the work area. Empty the cupboard under the kitchen sink or make the meter cupboard accessible.
- Do not use chemical drain cleaner. It rarely clears a real blockage and makes the work more difficult and dangerous for the technician.
- Have maintenance done. Periodic maintenance of your central heating boiler prevents costly breakdowns.
- Check who pays. If you're renting, report it to the landlord first. In case of water damage, insurance may cover part of it; see water damage and insurance.
