A water heater is a storage tank: it heats a quantity of water and keeps it warm until you turn on the tap. An electric water heater often hangs in the kitchen, in the loft or in a storage room. A close-in water heater is a small heater under the worktop or washbasin, for quick hot water at one tap point. A gas water heater works differently: it heats the water on gas at the moment you use it.
There is also a water heater that draws its heat from the central heating boiler, a so-called indirectly fired water heater. You'll encounter this with a boiler that only heats, or if you need more hot water than one boiler can supply. We look at your home and your hot water usage and advise what suits best. If it's about the boiler itself, read central heating boiler replacement.
- No or insufficient hot water — the water becomes lukewarm or runs out quickly.
- Drips or puddle under the water heater — at the valve, connection or tank itself.
- Hissing, crackling or ticking — often limescale on the heating element.
- Old or open gas water heater — without proper extraction of combustion gases.

More about central heating & heatingBreakdown & leaks
Is the water heater leaking or does the water stay cold? We find the cause: element, thermostat, valve or the tank itself.

Removing limescale, checking element and anode. This makes the water heater last longer and use less energy.

Not every fault means a new appliance. A thermostat, a heating element or an inlet combination can often be replaced. But if the tank itself is leaking, the water heater is finished. Rust in the tank cannot be repaired.
With a gas water heater we focus mainly on safety. A gas water heater burns gas in your home. If the exhaust of combustion gases doesn't work properly, carbon monoxide can be released — a gas you can't smell. We advise against an old, open gas water heater without its own exhaust. We'll explain which solution is safe, and you'll hear beforehand what it costs.
- The tank is leaking — replacement is then the only real solution.
- Increasingly frequent breakdowns — and parts are becoming difficult to obtain.
- Not enough hot water — for your household: a larger water heater or a different solution would suit better.
- An old or open gas water heater — better to replace with a safe appliance with proper flue.
Unsure between a water heater, a gas water heater or a combi boiler? Then we'll look together at your home, your usage and the space available. If there's a lot of limescale in your water, also read about a water softener.

While you wait for us
There are a few things you can safely do yourself. You shouldn't touch the inside of a water heater or gas water heater.
- Is the water heater leaking? — turn off the supply tap to the water heater. For an electric water heater: first switch off the power at the fuse box.
- Does the valve drip during heating? — that's normal: the water expands. If it also drips when the water heater is not heating, something is wrong.
- Electric water heater cold? — check whether the circuit in the meter cupboard is still on and whether the plug or switch is on.
- Smell of gas at the gas water heater? — open windows and doors, don't use any switches or flames, turn off the gas tap and leave the house. Call the national gas emergency number 0800-9009.
When should you call us?
- Immediate (24/7) — the water heater is leaking badly, or water is getting near electrics. If you smell gas, first call 0800-9009.
- Today — no hot water, or a gas water heater that keeps cutting out.
- By appointment — replacing a water heater or gas water heater, installing or descaling a close-in boiler.

Frequently asked questions about water heaters and gas water heaters
What is the difference between a water heater and a gas water heater?
A water heater is a storage tank that heats water and keeps it warm. A gas water heater heats the water on gas at the moment you turn on the tap. So a water heater has a supply that can run out; a gas water heater doesn't, but it often delivers less water at once.
What is a close-in boiler?
A small water heater that hangs under the worktop or washbasin. It provides quick hot water at one tap point, so you don't have to run the tap for long before it gets warm.
My water heater is dripping at the valve. Is that serious?
Some dripping during heating is normal: the water expands and the overflow valve releases it. The drip water should drain away via a discharge pipe. If it drips even when the boiler is not heating, or if the tank itself is leaking, please call us.
How hot should the water in a water heater be?
We recommend keeping a water heater at a minimum of 60 degrees. That way legionella has no chance in the tank. We therefore advise against lowering it to save energy.
Is an old gas water heater dangerous?
A gas water heater burns gas indoors. If the extraction does not work properly, carbon monoxide can be released, a gas you cannot smell. We advise against an open gas water heater without its own extraction. Also install a carbon monoxide detector near gas appliances.
Can a water heater be connected to my central heating boiler?
Yes, that's called an indirectly fired water heater. It draws its heat from the central heating boiler. Whether that suits you depends on your boiler and installation. We'll take a look and advise honestly.
What does a new water heater or gas water heater cost?
That depends on the type, the size and how the connections currently run. You will hear the cost in advance: we work with a fixed price quoted upfront.
Why does my water heater make a hissing or crackling sound?
Usually there is limescale on the heating element. That wastes energy and damages the element faster. Descaling helps; with very hard water, a water softener can protect the water heater.
