Underfloor heating pump faulty if the floor stays cold
Pump humming or not running? Send us a photo of the rating plate via WhatsApp, or call 070 783 0224.

Most underfloor heating systems have their own circulation pump at the manifold. This ensures that water flows through the loops in the floor. If that pump doesn't work, the floor stays cold, even if the boiler or heat pump is producing hot water normally. It often happens at the start of the heating season: after the summer the pump is stuck.
Short answer
An underfloor heating pump that hums but doesn't turn is often stuck after a period of inactivity. If it doesn't turn at all, check whether there's power (plug, switch, fuse). If it stays silent or makes noise, it needs to be freed or replaced. Send a photo of the type plate for a tailored price.
- Check whether the light or display on the pump is on.
- Humming or ticking? Often seized after the summer.
- Visit: starting rate € 100 – € 165 excl. VAT (€ 121 – € 199.65 incl.) plus call-out charge.

How to recognise a faulty pump
- Humming without running. The motor is receiving power but the shaft is stuck. Typical after summer or a long period of inactivity.
- Ticking or rattling. Air in the pump or a worn bearing. Bleed first; if the noise continues, the pump needs replacing.
- Nothing: no sound, no light. Then the pump is not receiving power or the electronics are broken.
- Error message on the display. Modern pumps have an LED or display with a fault indication. Take a photo of it.
- Pipes at the manifold warm, floor cold. The hot water arrives, but isn't circulating.
What you can check yourself
- Power. Is the plug in, is any switch on, has the circuit in the meter cupboard not been switched off?
- Setting. Many pumps have speed settings. Is it accidentally on the lowest setting or switched off?
- Thermostat. In some systems, the pump only switches on when a room thermostat calls for heat. Turn the thermostat up.
- Do not unscrew. Loosening a seized shaft or replacing the pump is work for a technician: the system must be partially depressurised for this.
Free up, replace or the whole pump unit?
If the pump is just stuck, we can sometimes free it and it will continue running normally. If the motor or electronics are broken, or if it makes persistent noise, we replace the pump. We bring a suitable type with the same installation length and connections, so no sawing of pipes is needed. That's why we ask for a photo of the type plate in advance.
If the entire manifold with pump unit is outdated or also leaking, it may be wiser to replace everything in one go. See replacing manifold.
How we replace the pump
- Isolate and depressurise around the pump.
- Old pump out, new one in with new seals.
- Filling and bleeding, so the pump does not run dry.
- Set up and test: we set the pump to your system and check that all zones heat up.
What does a new pump for underfloor heating cost?
The price of the pump itself depends on make and model. That is why we give a tailored quote after a photo of the nameplate.

Questions about the underfloor heating pump
Why is my underfloor heating pump humming?
Usually the shaft is stuck, often after summer. Sometimes it can be freed again. If that doesn't work, the pump needs to be replaced.
Can I replace the pump myself?
We advise against it. The system must be partially depressurised, no air must remain in the pump and the pump must match the system.
How do I know which pump I have?
The pump has a nameplate with make and model. Take a photo of it and send it along, then we'll bring the right replacement.
What does a new pump cost?
That depends on make and model. You'll get a price in advance. A visit starts with the call-out charge of €100 – €165 excl. VAT (€121 – €199.65 incl.).
The pump is running, but the floor stays cold. What now?
Then the problem is somewhere else: air, a stuck thermostatic head or the mixing valve. See underfloor heating not getting warm.
