Whether it's a combi boiler, an electric water heater or a gas water heater: without hot water the household grinds to a halt. The cause is often simpler than you think. First it's important to know where your hot water comes from, because everything else depends on that.
Short answer
If you have no hot water, first check what produces your hot water. A combi boiler: check the pressure and error code, and whether the heating still works. An electric water heater: check whether it is switched on and the circuit in the meter cupboard has not tripped. A gas water heater: check whether the pilot light or ignition is working. If it stays cold, have a technician take a look.
- Only cold at one tap? Then the problem is often in that tap or mixer tap.
- Heating works but no hot water: often the diverter valve or a sensor.
- Technician: call-out charge € 100 – € 165 excl. VAT (€ 121 – € 199.65 incl.).

Where does your hot water come from?
No hot water from a combi boiler
- Is the heating not working either? Then the boiler is probably in fault mode. Check the pressure and code; see boiler breakdown.
- Heating works, but no hot water? Then the boiler isn't switching properly to hot water. Often it's the diverter valve, a flow switch or a sensor. That's a job for a technician.
- Hot first, then cold? With a small combi boiler and several showers in a row, the capacity may simply run out. Another cause is a dirty heat exchanger due to limescale.
- Lukewarm water with low flow? Some boilers only fire up at a minimum water flow. Turn the tap on a bit more and see if the boiler fires up.
No hot water from a water heater or gas water heater
Electric water heater. Check in the meter cupboard whether the circuit for the water heater has not tripped. If the RCD keeps tripping when the water heater is heating up, the heating element may be broken; see also RCD. A water heater that leaks water at the pressure relief valve sometimes drips normally during heating, but if it really keeps running, have it checked.
Gas water heater. A gas water heater is a gas appliance. If the ignition doesn't come on, first check the batteries on a battery-ignition gas water heater. If you smell gas, do not continue yourself and follow gas smell in the house. Work on a gas water heater, like on a central heating boiler, falls under the regulations for gas combustion installations: only a company with a CO certificate may repair or install it.

Is only one tap cold?
If hot water comes from the kitchen tap but not from the shower, it's usually not the boiler or water heater. A thermostatic mixer tap may be stuck or scaled up, or a non-return valve in the tap may no longer be working. That's a small repair or a new tap. Even after work on the pipes, an isolator valve may still be half closed.

Questions about no hot water
Why do I have heating but no hot water?
In a combi boiler, a valve or sensor switches between heating and hot water. If it doesn't work properly, the water stays cold while the radiators get warm. That requires a technician.
My water heater isn't producing hot water anymore. What should I check first?
Whether the circuit in the meter cupboard is on and whether the water heater is receiving power. If the RCD trips as soon as the water heater heats up, the heating element is often broken.
The hot water goes cold after a few minutes. Is my boiler broken?
Not always. With several showers in a row, a small combi boiler may not keep up. If it also happens with one shower, limescale or a faulty sensor may be the cause.
Can I repair a gas water heater myself?
No. A gas water heater is a gas appliance; only a company with a CO certificate may work on it. You may replace the ignition batteries yourself.
What does it cost if a technician comes out?
With us it starts with the starting rate of € 100 – € 165 excl. VAT (€ 121 – € 199.65 incl.) for the first half hour with diagnosis, plus call-out charges. Parts only with your approval.
