Lead pipe replacement in The Hague
In homes built before approximately 1960, lead water pipes are still regularly found. In The Hague, this often concerns pre-war ground-floor flats, upstairs apartments and townhouses. Lead can enter your drinking water in small quantities. This is particularly inadvisable for young children and pregnant women. The government therefore advises replacing lead pipes.
How to recognise a lead pipe
Lead is dull grey and relatively soft. If you scratch it carefully with a key, it becomes shiny silver. A magnet won't stick to it. Lead pipes often run in curves rather than right angles, and the joints look bulbous or thickened.
Where to look
Start at the water meter, usually in the meter cupboard or crawl space, and follow the pipe to the kitchen and bathroom. If you only see copper or plastic, there may still be a piece of lead behind a wall or under the floor. If in doubt, we will check it for you.
What falls under you, what under the water company
The pipe up to and including the water meter belongs to the water company. Everything after the water meter belongs to the property owner. We replace that section. If there is also lead before the meter, report this to your water company.
How we approach it
