Grease and food waste combine to form a blockage in the pipe. In this short explanation you'll see what you can try yourself, what you'd better not do and when to call us.
Grease is your kitchen sink's biggest enemy
Frying fat, gravy and oil go down the kitchen sink warm and liquid, but cool down in the pipe and solidify. Coffee grounds, food scraps and soap stick to it. This slowly blocks the passage. A drain unblocker from the supermarket often pokes a hole in that layer; a few weeks later it's blocked again.
The washing machine drain is often on the same pipe. Lint, hair and detergent residue make it worse. Does water come up in the kitchen sink when the washing machine pumps, or does the drain behind the machine overflow? Then it's time to have the entire pipe cleaned.

Want to try yourself first? Here's how to do it safely
Many blockages are in the trap. You can often check this yourself.
- Unscrew the siphon — put a bucket underneath, unscrew the siphon and clean it. When refitting, check the rubber seals.
- Plunger on the sink — block the overflow with a wet cloth, otherwise the pressure escapes.
- Hot water with washing-up liquid — can loosen a developing grease layer. Pour it in gently in stages.
- Washing machine: clean the filter — the pump filter of the machine is often full of lint. Also check that the drain hose isn't kinked.

Why does my kitchen sink keep getting blocked?
Usually caused by grease that cools and solidifies in the pipe, combined with food waste and coffee grounds. A drain unblocker often only makes a small hole; we clean the pipe thoroughly.
The washing machine is pumping water back into the kitchen sink. What's going on?
Then the shared drain is (partially) blocked. The water from the washing machine cannot drain away and finds the easiest way out. We clear the pipe beyond the point where both join.
Can I clean the trap myself?
Yes. Put a bucket under the trap, unscrew it and clean it. When refitting, watch the rubber seals, otherwise it will leak.
Do you use chemical products?
No, we prefer to work mechanically. Chemical drain cleaners damage pipes and seals.
