A smell of gas is always a reason to act immediately. First aid for a gas leak comes from the grid operator, not from us: they are available day and night and make the situation safe. Afterwards, once the grid operator has found the cause in your internal pipe or appliance, we come and repair it. On this page you can read what to do, in the right order.
Short answer: what do you do if you smell gas?
If you smell gas, open windows and doors, turn off the main gas tap, don't use any flame and don't operate any electrical appliances or switches, not even to turn them off. Then call the national gas and electricity fault number: 0800-9009 (free, 24 hours a day). If there's immediate danger, such as fire or someone feeling unwell, call 112.
- Call from outside the property if possible, not next to where you smell the gas.
- The grid operator makes it safe; then an installer repairs the internal pipe or appliance.
- We come for the repair, not for the initial report.

Smell of gas: these steps, in this order
- Windows and doors open, so that the gas can escape.
- Turn off the mains gas tap. It's located at the gas meter in the meter cupboard.
- No fire or flame, no smoking, and do not operate any electrical appliances or switches, not even to turn them off. No doorbell or lift either.
- Call 0800-9009, the national gas and electricity emergency number. It's free and available 24/7. Preferably call from outside.
- Warn housemates and neighbours if you also smell it in the stairwell or at the neighbours'.
What the grid operator says
According to grid operator Liander: open windows and doors, close the main gas tap, no fire or flame, do not smoke, do not operate any electrical appliances (not even to switch them off) and call the National emergency number 0800-9009, free and available 24 hours a day.

After the grid operator's visit
The grid operator traces the leak and makes the situation safe. If the leak is in their part (the connection up to and including the gas meter), they repair it. If it's in your part, such as the internal pipe, a gas tap, the connection to the cooker or the central heating boiler, that section's gas tap remains closed until an installer has repaired it.
That's when we come in. We locate the leak at the spot indicated by the grid operator, replace the coupling, tap or section of pipe, and then check the entire internal pipe for leak-tightness. Only then is the gas turned back on.
Where gas smells in the home often come from
- The connection to the cooker or hob: an old hose or a loose coupling.
- A gas tap that no longer closes properly, for example an old tap behind the cooker.
- The central heating boiler: the gas connection or the gas valve. If a boiler also gives off a strange smell or soot: leave it switched off.
- Work on the property: after a renovation or drilling into a wall, a pipe can be damaged.
Switching to induction? Have the old gas tap safely capped off straight away. See relocating or capping off a gas pipe.
A smell of gas is different from carbon monoxide
Natural gas has an odour added so you can smell a leak. You cannot smell carbon monoxide (CO). CO is produced by poor combustion, for example in a boiler or gas water heater with a blocked flue. Headache, nausea or drowsiness in several household members at the same time can be a sign: go outside and call 112. A CO detector near the boiler and in bedrooms gives a warning before you notice anything.
Have your boiler serviced regularly; during central heating boiler servicing we also check the combustion and the flue gas discharge.
