A hybrid heat pump works together with your central heating boiler. The heat pump heats the house as long as it can; on cold days or for hot water the boiler takes over. This means you use less gas, without having to rebuild the whole house. Whether it pays for you depends on your home. That's why we always start with a check.
Short answer: what is a hybrid heat pump?
A hybrid heat pump is a small heat pump that sits alongside your existing central heating boiler. The heat pump does most of the heating, the boiler helps during cold weather and usually supplies the hot tap water. It's best suited to a reasonably insulated home with a central heating boiler that's not yet at the end of its life.
- Insulation and radiators determine how much gas you save.
- For homeowners there is the ISDE subsidy, subject to conditions from RVO.
- According to RVO, an installation company must install the system, not you yourself.

How a hybrid heat pump works
A hybrid heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it to the water in your central heating system. As long as it is not too cold outside, it can heat the house on its own. When it gets colder or you need a lot of heat quickly, the central heating boiler kicks in. Hot water for shower and kitchen usually still comes from the boiler in most systems.
The advantage: you keep your trusted boiler as backup and don't need to invest immediately in a fully electric system. The disadvantage: you continue using gas, and an outdoor unit makes noise and takes up space.
What we check beforehand
- Insulation. The better the house is insulated, the more the heat pump can do on its own. With a poorly insulated house, the boiler takes over a lot and you save little.
- Radiators or underfloor heating. A heat pump works best with a low water temperature. Underfloor heating or large radiators are ideal.
- The central heating boiler. The boiler must be suitable to work together with a heat pump, and not about to be replaced. If it's old, we'll also calculate the option of a new boiler for you.
- Space for the outdoor unit. On the façade, the flat roof or in the garden, with attention to noise towards the neighbours.
- Electricity. The heat pump gets its own circuit. See fuse box expansion.
ISDE subsidy for a hybrid heat pump
What RVO says (read October 2026)
According to the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, homeowners can apply for ISDE subsidy for a (hybrid) heat pump. The main conditions:
- a building services company does the complete installation; self-installation does not count;
- you apply for the subsidy after installation, within 24 months;
- if the heat pump is on the notification code list, you state the notification code in the application;
- it must be a new heat pump, not second-hand;
- the property has a construction year before 1 January 2019 (or the planning permission was applied for before 1 July 2018).
The subsidy amount depends on the appliance; check the RVO website for details. We provide the invoice and the information you need for the application.

From check to installation
- Details and photos. Year of construction, boiler, radiators or underfloor heating, energy label if you have one, and a photo of the location for the outdoor unit.
- Honest advice. We tell you whether a hybrid heat pump makes sense, or whether insulation or another solution would be better first.
- Proposal with price. Equipment, installation, electrics and any modifications, on paper in advance.
- Installation and commissioning. We connect the heat pump to the boiler, configure the interaction and explain how to use it.
A complete hybrid installation is not listed as a fixed price in our price list; the price depends on the appliance and your home. You will always receive a proposal first. If you only want an assessment, the starting rate of €100 – €165 excl. VAT (€121 – €199.65 incl.) applies.
Questions about a hybrid heat pump
Will I save a lot of gas with a hybrid heat pump?
That depends mainly on the insulation and the radiators. In a reasonably insulated house the heat pump takes over a large part of the heating. In a poorly insulated house much less.
Can every central heating boiler work with a hybrid heat pump?
Not every one. We look at the make and age of your boiler. Sometimes a different connection is needed, sometimes it's wiser to replace the boiler first.
Do I get a subsidy for a hybrid heat pump?
Homeowners can apply for ISDE subsidy according to RVO, if an installation company does the installation and you apply within 24 months after installation. Check rvo.nl for the current amount.
Does the outdoor unit make a lot of noise?
An outdoor unit makes audible noise, especially when working hard. That's why we choose the location together with you, with consideration for bedrooms and neighbours.
Do I still need a central heating boiler afterwards?
Yes, with a hybrid system the boiler remains. It helps in cold weather and usually supplies the hot tap water.
What if the hybrid heat pump breaks down?
The boiler usually takes over. See our heat pump breakdown page for what you can check yourself.
