A new high-power appliance needs its own circuit. If you put an induction hob, dryer or EV charging point on an existing circuit, it will trip at first use, or the cable will overheat. Extension is often a job of a few hours. On this page you can read what it costs and when it's no longer possible.
Short answer: what does an extra circuit cost?
Adding four extra circuits to an existing unit costs € 400 excl. VAT (€ 484 incl.) at PandFix. Installing a cooker circuit for induction costs € 350 excl. VAT (€ 423.50 incl.), circuits for washing machine and dryer € 385 excl. VAT (€ 465.85 incl.). Expansion is only possible if the unit has space and capacity for it; otherwise replacement is necessary.
- Every heavy appliance (hob, oven, dryer, EV charging point) should be on its own circuit.
- A photo of the unit shows whether there is still space.
- Running the cable to the appliance is a separate part of the price.

When do you need an extra circuit?
- Induction cooking. An induction hob requires high power. Usually a dedicated cooker circuit is added, sometimes with a perilex connection. More about this at perilex and three-phase power.
- EV charging point. An EV charging point always gets its own circuit with its own RCD protection. See also EV charging point installation.
- Washing machine and dryer. If they're together on one circuit with the rest of the loft, the power often trips when both run at the same time.
- Dishwasher, oven, water heater or air conditioning: all appliances that, according to the manufacturer, often require their own circuit. Check the manual for details.
- Renovation. A new kitchen or bathroom is the perfect moment to get the circuits right in one go.
Extension or replacement?
Expansion is possible if there is still space in the box for extra modules and the box itself is in order. We look at three things:
- Space in the box. If the rail is full, nothing more will fit without replacing or enlarging the box.
- Number of circuits per RCD. If many circuits are already behind one RCD, an extra circuit becomes impractical: one fault then trips everything.
- Age. For old units with fuse wire or a single RCD (residual current device) for the whole house, we recommend replacement. What that costs is on fuse box replacement: costs.
If you have a single-phase connection and want to use several high-power appliances simultaneously, the connection itself may be too light. You request a heavier connection from the grid operator; we're happy to advise you on this.
How the expansion works
- Photo of the meter cupboard. This shows us the number of circuits, the RCDs and the available space.
- Cable route. We discuss how the new cable will run to the kitchen, loft or driveway: through existing conduits, along the skirting or in a trunking.
- Price in advance. Expansion plus running the cable, with the amounts from the table.
- Connect and test. We connect the new circuit, test it and label it on the box.

Questions about expanding your fuse box
What does an extra circuit in the meter cupboard cost?
Four extra circuits in an existing unit cost € 400 excl. VAT (€ 484 incl.). Running the cable to the appliance is additional, for example a cooker circuit: € 350 excl. VAT (€ 423.50 incl.).
Can I connect an induction hob to a normal socket?
Usually not. An induction hob requires far more power than a socket can handle. Check the manual; often a dedicated cooker circuit or a perilex connection is required.
Does an EV charging point need its own circuit?
Yes. An EV charging point gets its own circuit with its own protection. When expanding we include that straight away.
My fuse box is full. What now?
Then replacement or a larger box is needed. What that costs is on our fuse box replacement: costs page.
Will there be chasing required for the new cable?
Not always. Often the cable can go through existing conduits or neatly in cable trunking. Where that's not possible, we discuss it beforehand.
How quickly can you come?
We plan upgrades by arrangement, often within a few working days. Call 070 783 0224 or send a photo via WhatsApp.
