Short answer
As a rule of thumb, plaster dries about a week per centimetre of layer thickness. A thin finishing coat on a ceiling is often dry within a few days; a thick layer on an old wall can take weeks. Plaster is dry when it's evenly light in colour throughout, with no dark patches. Ventilate well, but don't heat excessively.
- Rule of thumb: about a week per centimetre of layer thickness.
- Dry = evenly light in colour.
- Ventilation helps; turning up the heating does not.

How long does it take?
The drying time depends mainly on the layer thickness, the substrate, the temperature and the ventilation. As a rule of thumb, approximately one week per centimetre of layer thickness. In practice:
- Thin finishing coat over concrete or plasterboard: often a few days.
- Normal plaster layer on a wall: allow about a week or slightly longer.
- Thick layer to straighten a crooked wall, or in a cold, damp room: several weeks.
How can you tell it's dry?
- Wet plaster is dark. Dry plaster is evenly light, with gypsum plaster often light pink or white.
- Dark patches or edges mean it's still wet there; often in corners and behind furniture.
- If in doubt, wait a few more days. Painting too early causes stains and peeling paint.
What helps, and what doesn't
- Do: windows ajar or ventilation on, the door open, the room at normal room temperature.
- Don't: force-dry with a heater or hairdryer. The outside will dry too quickly and cracks may appear.
- Don't: place furniture against the freshly plastered wall; moisture will get trapped there.
After drying
Start painting with a diluted first coat of latex (or a primer), so the paint adheres well. For wallpapering, prime first. Also read ready for painting or ready for wallpapering.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I paint after one day?
Almost never. Even a thin layer needs a few days. Wait until the entire wall is evenly light in colour.
Why does my plastering become patchy after painting?
Usually because it wasn't completely dry yet, or because the first coat wasn't diluted. Let it dry and apply a diluted coat.
Can the heating be on?
Yes, at normal room temperature. Don't turn it up high.
Does plaster dry more slowly in winter?
Yes, due to cold and humid air. Good ventilation and keeping the room at temperature helps.
