Short answer
A plasterer applies a thin layer of gypsum or lime plaster to the wall and finishes it flat and smooth. Ready for painting means you can paint directly; ready for wallpapering is slightly less tight and intended for wallpaper or lining paper.
- Well-adhered paint can be plastered over after a bonding coat; wallpaper must be removed first.
- Drying time: approximately one week per centimetre of layer thickness.

When should you have walls plastered?
Plastering walls is the way to get a wall flat, smooth and even again. This is necessary if old wallpaper has been removed and the wall is full of patches, if there is textured paint on it that you want to remove, after renovation work where pipes have been chased in, or if you want to be able to paint the wall directly instead of wallpapering.
- After removing wallpaper or textured paint
- For new-build properties delivered ready for wallpapering, if you prefer to paint
- After demolition work, a breakthrough or chased-in pipes
- When the old plaster layer sounds hollow or is coming loose
How a wall is plastered
- Covering: floor, frames, skirting boards and sockets.
- Preparing the surface: cutting away loose sections, filling holes, fitting corner profiles to corners.
- Priming with a bonding coat, matched to concrete, sand-lime brick or old paint.
- Plastering: applying the layer, levelling it and finishing it smooth after it has set.
- Drying and finishing; then a primer and the first coat of emulsion.
Ready for wallpapering, ready for painting or smooth
- Ready for wallpapering: flat, but minor imperfections may remain; wallpaper or lining paper will cover them.
- Ready for painting: smooth enough to paint directly with latex; raking light reveals no major imperfections.
- Extra smooth (high-gloss finish): for a wall that will be in the light or receive a dark colour; requires more work.
When requesting a quote, it helps if you tell us which finish you want and what will go on the wall afterwards.

Questions about plastering walls
Can plastering be done over paint?
Often yes, if the paint is firmly attached. We sand or scratch the layer and apply a bonding coat. If the paint is flaking, we remove it first.
How long does a plastered wall need to dry?
Allow approximately one week per centimetre of layer thickness. A thin finishing coat dries faster. Only paint when the wall is evenly light in colour.
Which is better: plastering or lining paper?
Lining paper is quicker and bridges small cracks, but the texture remains visible. Plastering gives a truly smooth wall. With extensive damage we recommend plastering.
How much dust does it create?
Plastering itself produces little dust; trimming and sanding do. We cover and clean up, but put valuables in another room.
How do I request it?
