Short answer
A wall ready for wallpapering is flat, clean and without holes, so that wallpaper or lining paper adheres smoothly. Minor imperfections are acceptable, as wallpaper covers them. It is a level less smooth than ready for painting.
- New builds are usually delivered ready for wallpapering.
- If you want to paint straight away, ready for painting is the better choice.

What is ready for wallpapering?
Ready for wallpapering is a finish level: the wall is flat enough to wallpaper, holes and seams are filled and there are no loose parts or protrusions left. Small pits and a slightly visible texture are acceptable. This makes ready for wallpapering quicker than ready for painting and suits wallpaper, fibreglass or lining paper well.
- After removing old wallpaper, for new wallpaper
- For lining paper or renovation fleece that will be painted
- For a wall that was never completely flat
- As an intermediate step before plastering ready for painting later
How we make a wall ready for wallpapering
- Remove old wallpaper and adhesive residue, using a steamer if necessary.
- Filling holes, cracks and chases.
- Levelling with a thin layer on areas that are not flat.
- Sanding and dust-free cleaning.
- Prime so the wallpaper adheres properly.
Sanding without dust clouds
Sanding creates dust. We work with sanding machines with extraction where possible, cover floors and furniture and keep doors to other rooms closed. We sand small repairs by hand. Afterwards we vacuum the room dust-free, so wallpapering can begin immediately.
Spray plaster, textured paint and decorative plaster from before 1994 may contain asbestos. If in doubt, have a sample tested before sanding, chiselling or demolishing. Plastering over an intact layer is often possible; we'll discuss this in advance.

Questions about ready for wallpapering and sanding
What is the difference between ready for wallpapering and ready for painting?
Ready for painting is smoother, so you can apply latex directly without imperfections showing. Ready for wallpapering is level, but small pits are acceptable.
Can I paint on a wall that is ready for wallpapering?
It's possible, but in raking light you'll see the unevenness. With glass-fibre wallpaper or lining paper over it, it will become a neat painted wall.
My new-build home is ready for wallpapering. Does anything else need doing?
For wallpaper usually only priming and touching up small seams. If you want to paint, ready for painting plastering is recommended.
Do you also remove the old wallpaper?
Yes. You can also do it yourself to save money; just let us know how much is still on.
