Short answer
Plastering a ceiling means applying a new layer of plaster over the existing ceiling, finished smooth. Filler, old spray coats and joints between concrete slabs disappear under a sleek layer.
- The ceiling must be dry and solid; after a leak, first solve the cause.
- Spray finishes from before 1994 may contain asbestos: if in doubt, have it tested first.

Why have a ceiling plastered?
Many ceilings in South Holland are concrete with a textured spray layer (spack) or have visible V-joints between the panels. Anyone wanting a calm, smooth ceiling has a plaster layer applied over it. After a leak, a renovation or the removal of screws, plastering is also the way to get the ceiling even again.
- Smoothing a textured or structured ceiling
- V-joints or cracks that keep coming back
- Ceiling after removing Artex or a suspended ceiling
- Repair after a leak, once the source has been resolved and the ceiling is dry
How we plaster a ceiling
- Clear and cover the room: floor, walls along the ceiling, remove lights.
- Pre-treat joints and cracks with reinforcement mesh, so they don't come back.
- Bonding coat on the existing textured finish or concrete.
- Plastering from a rolling scaffold or platforms, in one continuous operation per surface.
- Drying; after that the ceiling can be painted.
What type of ceiling do you have?
- Concrete ceiling with filler: very common from the 1970s onwards; plastering over it is possible after a bonding coat.
- Ceiling with V-joints: first seal and reinforce the joints, then plaster smooth.
- Reed ceiling (pre-war): first check whether it's still secure; sometimes a new ceiling underneath is the better choice.
- Plasterboard: finish joints and plaster completely smooth or just fill the joints.
Spray plaster, textured paint and decorative plaster from before 1994 may contain asbestos. If in doubt, have a sample tested before sanding, chiselling or demolishing. Plastering over an intact layer is often possible; we'll discuss this in advance.
What does plastering a ceiling cost?

Questions about ceiling plastering
Can you plaster over a textured ceiling?
Yes, usually. The Artex must be firmly attached; we apply a bonding coat and then the plaster coat. We remove any loose areas first.
Will the seams come back later?
With concrete panels, joints can become visible due to movement of the building. By reinforcing them in advance with mesh, we greatly reduce that risk.
Do I need to empty the room before the ceiling work?
Ideally completely: we work from a mobile scaffold. If that's not possible, we move furniture to one side and cover it.
My ceiling has a damp patch. Can it be plastered?
Only once the cause has been found and fixed and the ceiling is dry. Also read about damp patches on the ceiling.
