Short answer

Decorative plaster is a plaster layer with grains that creates a visible texture. Spachtelputz is the best-known type: grainy and matt, in white or colour. It covers minor imperfections and is impact-resistant.

  • The grain size (1, 1.5 or 2 mm) determines how coarse the texture looks.
  • If you want a smooth wall again later, the textured layer must be removed or plastered over.

What is the

Textured plaster: when do you choose it?

You choose decorative plaster if you want a wall that isn't perfectly smooth but has a subtle texture. In a hallway, stairwell or corridor it's practical: minor knocks and marks are less noticeable than on a smooth, painted wall. It's also a way to give a surface with minor imperfections a neat finish.

  • Hallway, corridor and stairwell, where the wall takes a lot of wear
  • A feature wall in the living room
  • A wall that isn't completely flat
  • If you prefer not to repaint every year
Textures

Which texture?

  • Spachtelputz: grainy, uniform; the best-known decorative plaster.
  • Granol-like texture: applied with roller or trowel, slightly coarser.
  • Fine grain (around 1 mm): calm and subtle, suitable for living rooms.
  • Coloured or white: supplied in colour or painted afterwards.

If in doubt, ask for a test patch or a photo of a previous result in the same grain.

Working method

How we apply decorative plaster

  1. Surface: level sufficiently and fill holes; decorative plaster masks minor imperfections, not large holes.
  2. Base coat in the colour of the plaster, so nothing shows through.
  3. Application with a trowel, in one go per wall section to prevent visible joins.
  4. Apply texture and allow to dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions about decorative plaster and spachtelputz

Can decorative plaster be made smooth again?

Yes, but it's work: the textured layer is scraped off or a levelling layer is applied over it, then smooth plastering.

Can I paint over decorative plaster later?

Yes, with wall paint and a roller with a longer pile, so the paint reaches into the texture.

Does old decorative plaster contain asbestos?

Spray plaster, textured paint and decorative plaster from before 1994 may contain asbestos. If in doubt, have a sample tested before sanding, chiselling or demolishing. Plastering over an intact layer is often possible; we'll discuss this in advance.

Is decorative plaster suitable for the bathroom?

There are moisture-resistant types, but around the shower we recommend tiles or a waterproof finish. Elsewhere it's fine.

How do I request it?
