A walk-in shower without a threshold is more spacious, easier to keep clean and convenient when stepping in becomes more difficult. The work isn't in the glass screen, but under the tiles: the drain must be positioned at the right place and height, the floor must be given a gradient and everything must be watertight before tiling. That determines whether the shower will still be dry in ten years' time.
Short answer
For a walk-in shower, the shower tray is removed, the drain is adapted (gully or channel), the floor is given a slope towards the drain, everything is waterproofed and then tiled or finished with a shower panel. Our price list states "renovate shower: replace cubicle and floor tiles" for €1,249.59 – €1,512 excl. VAT (€1,512 – €1,829.52 incl.). Whether more is needed depends mainly on the floor and the drain.
- On a wooden floor a walk-in shower is more difficult; often a ready-made element is needed.
- Channel or drain: a channel along the wall makes a gradient in one direction possible.
- Waterproofing under the tiles is more important than the tile itself.

From shower tray to walk-in shower
- Removal. Enclosure, shower tray and tiles in the shower corner removed. We inspect the floor, the drain and the pipes behind it.
- Adjust the drain. The drain of a shower tray is often too high or in the wrong place for a floor without a threshold. We install a shower channel or drain at the right location.
- Creating gradient. The floor must slope gently towards the waste, so no puddles remain. With a channel drain this can be in one direction, with a point drain in four.
- Waterproofing. Floor and walls in the wet zone receive a waterproof layer, with tape in the corners and collars around pipes. This happens before tiling.
- Finishing. Tiling and grouting, or fitting a shower panel (plastic or mineral board) to the wall. Then the glass screen and the sealant joints.
Channel or drain, tiles or shower tray
- Shower channel along the wall: large tiles possible and slope in one direction. Slightly more expensive in materials.
- Drain in the centre: classic and economical, but the floor must slope in four directions, so smaller tiles or cuts are needed.
- Wall tiles: lots of choice, but grout that requires maintenance; see regrouting.
- Shower wall panels: large panels without joints, quickly installed and easy to keep clean. Also suitable for fitting over existing tiles, provided they're secure and level.
- Wooden floor: here a normal poured gradient floor is often not possible. There are lightweight, ready-made shower elements that do fit; we assess this beforehand.

Where a walk-in shower often goes wrong
The leaks we encounter with walk-in showers almost always have the same cause: insufficient gradient, a channel that is not watertight to the floor, or a wall without waterproofing behind the tiles. From the outside you see nothing of this for years, until a stain appears at the neighbours' or on the ceiling below.
That's why we show you the waterproof layer before tiling, and test the drain with a generous amount of water. If you live in a flat, it's wise to also check the owners' association (VvE) rules; some VvEs impose requirements on breaking open the floor or on sound insulation.
Questions about a walk-in shower
What does walk-in shower installation cost?
In our price list, shower renovation (replacing cabin and floor tiles) costs € 1,249.59 – € 1,512 excl. VAT (€ 1,512 – € 1,829.52 incl.). If the floor needs to be broken open or the drain relocated, additional items will be added. You will receive a price in advance.
Can a walk-in shower be installed on a wooden floor?
Sometimes. A poured screed floor on timber is often not suitable. There are lightweight ready-made shower elements that can be used. We assess this beforehand.
Which is better: a linear drain or a gully?
A linear drain provides a slope in one direction, allowing large tiles. A floor drain is more affordable but requires a slope towards four sides. Both work well if the gradient and waterproofing are correct.
How much gradient does a walk-in shower need?
Enough for water to flow naturally to the drain without running into the adjacent bathroom. The correct gradient depends on the drain, tile size and shape of the shower; we coordinate this during the on-site assessment.
Can a shower tray go over existing tiles?
Yes, if the tiles are secure and the wall is flat. If tiles sound hollow or there is moisture behind them, they must be removed first.
How long does installing a walk-in shower take?
That depends on the work on the floor and drain and the drying time of materials. We provide a schedule in advance, so you know how long you won't be able to use the shower.
