Sewer break The Hague from Scheveningen to Ypenburg

Sewer broken in The Hague? Call 070 783 0224, also for emergencies.

Rated on Google · Price in advance · Guarantee on the work

The Hague has one of the largest sewer networks in the region, with neighbourhoods from around 1900 alongside Vinex districts from after 2000. A sewer break in a townhouse in Duinoord therefore requires a different approach than a break in a garden in Ypenburg. We first find out where it is, and whether it's yours or the municipality's.

Who is responsible in The Hague?

What the municipality of The Hague says

If there's a blockage or fracture on your own property, you call a plumber yourself, or the property owner if you rent. The plumber determines whether the problem is on your property or in the municipality's section. Repairs on your own property are paid for by you or the landlord. If it's in the public sewer, a plumber is not allowed to fix it themselves: you report that to the municipality via the online form or 14070, and the municipality pays for that repair.

Please note: according to the municipality, The Hague does not reimburse the costs of a video inspection. A camera inspection is therefore also in The Hague primarily an investment in certainty: you know where the break is and who is responsible.

The municipality's connection conditions state that the connection pipe from the municipality continues approximately 30 to 50 centimetres beyond the property boundary. That's usually where your section begins. In our report we record how many metres from the façade the fracture is located, so the discussion about 'who owns this section' remains brief.

Soil and buildings

Old and new neighbourhoods, different sewers

The Hague's sewer system is approximately 1,400 kilometres long, with around 30,000 inspection manholes (figures from the municipality). Most new neighbourhoods have a separate system: rainwater and wastewater run through separate pipes. In the older city they often still run together through one pipe.

We notice this when there's a break. In neighbourhoods such as Zeeheldenkwartier, Duinoord and Statenkwartier, we often still find older connections under houses from around 1900, sometimes made of stoneware or cast iron. These become brittle or rust from the inside. In such cases, replacing a longer section is often wiser than a one-off repair. In Leidschenveen (1990s) and Ypenburg (built from the late 1990s onwards), PVC pipes are installed; there we're more likely to see a dislodged coupling or damage from excavation work than a deteriorated pipe.

Working method

How we tackle a sewer fracture in The Hague

  1. Call or WhatsApp. You tell us what you see. A photo of the subsidence, the manhole or the crawl space helps us assess what's needed.
  2. Camera inspection. We go into the pipe with the camera and determine with metre counter and transmitter where the fracture is and whether it's on your property or in the public section.
  3. Clarity about who is responsible. If the problem is on the municipality's side, we'll tell you and you'll receive the footage for your report.
  4. Price upfront and repair. If it's on your property, you'll receive a price and we'll carry out targeted repairs. Afterwards we check the result with the camera.
Neighbourhood

What we pay attention to in The Hague

  • Trees in the street: in avenues with old trees, such as in the Bomen- and Bloemenbuurt, roots often grow towards the joints of old connections.
  • Dune sand near the coast: in Scheveningen and Duindorp, loose sand easily washes into a broken pipe. This quickly causes a recurring blockage.
  • Ground-floor flats and tenement blocks: in Escamp, Laak and Segbroek, several homes often share a connection. In that case, the owners' association (VvE) or landlord is usually the client.
  • Parking and accessibility: in the city centre we plan the work so that the van can be parked nearby; for repairs under the pavement, notification to the municipality is sometimes required.
